Self-Care is Not One-Size-Fits-All.
We've been told that self-care looks a certain way: bubble baths, face masks, an hour-long meditation. And who doesn't like them? They are indeed wonderful, but we know, deep down, that sometimes, they aren't what we truly need. So let's start by acknowledging that there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to self-care practices. Maybe it's silence. Perhaps it's a pause or movement. Maybe it's saying no. The truth is, there is no singular formula. What nurtures us today might feel different tomorrow. What soothes one person might not work for another. The essence of self-care is deeply personal, ever-evolving, and rooted in what brings us back to ourselves. It's a broad concept, so listening to ourselves matters more than anything.
Listening to Your Body Can Change Everything
Studies show that tuning into our body's signals can significantly improve our well-being. Research from the American Psychological Association indicates that those who practice mindfulness and self-awareness experience lower stress levels, better sleep, and improved emotional regulation. While we’ve touched on this in other posts, it bears repeating: building self-care foundations that fit your needs is essential. When we listen—really listen—to what our body demands, we give ourselves the opportunity to restore, recharge, and show up as our best selves.
The Many Forms of Self-Care
Self-care isn't a single action—it's an ongoing practice that takes many forms. Here are some key areas to explore. Sometimes, we focus more on certain aspects and neglect others, so it's always a good idea to check in with ourselves and reassess what we need most.
🍏 Food as Self-Care: Nourishment affects our physical and emotional well-being, shaping our lives. A diet filled with natural ingredients nurtures our bodies, playing a vital role in our physical, mental, and emotional health. We've worked with incredible nutritionists who have helped us improve our overall well-being, and we highly recommend seeking expert guidance!
🏃 Movement as Self-Care: Moving is a natural part of our existence. Depending on where we are in life, different types of movement might resonate more: walking, stretching, dancing, strength training, or any other form of exercise we enjoy. Movement releases tension, boosts our mood, and enhances our energy. We make it a priority, first thing in the morning, no excuses!
🌜 Sleep as Self-Care: Sleep isn't just rest—it's restoration. It affects everything from mood and focus to heart health and immune function. Small changes can improve our sleep health:
-
Light exposure can reduce melatonin levels by 50%, so turn off devices two hours before bed and use eye masks to block out unwanted light.
-
A bedtime routine signals our bodies it's time to wind down.
-
Journaling before bed helps untangle emotions, making space for restful sleep. We keep a journal on our nightstands as a reminder to slow down.
💆 Relaxation as Self-Care: Unwinding looks different for everyone. We work hard and value staying up-to-date, but pausing isn’t about losing momentum; it’s about replenishing the energy that keeps us moving. Whether it’s a staycation, a few deep breaths between meetings, or simply giving ourselves permission to slow down, even small moments of peace have a profound impact.
Beyond the Basics: Other Key Self-Care Practices
📝 Emotional Self-Care: Our emotions need space to feel, process, and understand. Through journaling, therapy, meditation, or meaningful conversations, emotional self-care allows us to release and gain clarity. Remember that expressing our needs honestly leads to healthier relationships, to ourselves and those around us. In our lives, we meditate each morning before anyone wakes up and aim for at least 10 minutes of meditation before bedtime.
🌟 Gratitude as Self-Care: Gratitude shifts our perspective, reminding us of what we have rather than what we lack. It’s a simple but profound practice that rewires our brain for positivity. Research has shown that regularly expressing gratitude reduces stress, enhances emotional resilience, and fosters stronger relationships. We’ve made gratitude a part of our daily routine, sharing appreciation with others, or reflecting on the good in our lives. Even in challenging moments, finding small things to be grateful for brings comfort and perspective.
🌳 Intention as Self-Care: Our surroundings and how we feel in our bodies influence our mood, energy, and well-being. Comfort isn’t just about beautiful loungewear, it’s about feeling at ease. Soft, cozy clothing signals us to unwind, to shift from the outside world into a space of rest. Everywhere we’ve lived, even temporarily, we create cozy nooks filled with things we love: plants, candles, framed memories. Surrounding ourselves with small joys makes all the difference.
📚 Intellectual Self-Care: Engaging with books, podcasts, or new learning experiences keeps our minds active and inspired. Curiosity allows us to see the world through different lenses and understand challenges in new ways. We personally love Mel Robbins' podcast and lifestyle articles from The Atlantic and NYTimes. Keeping books nearby encourages continual learning and reflection.

Because Taking Time for Yourself Matters
We all know it; self-care isn’t always easy to prioritize. That’s why we rely on small, tangible tools that serve as reminders. A journal that encourages reflection. An eye mask that signals it’s time to rest. A soft robe that wraps us warmly when the day has felt too cold. A comfy outfit that moves with us. These are invitations, to pause, to be present, and to give ourselves permission to care.
At Damara, we created a space where self-care feels natural, accessible, and intentional. Whether it's through rituals to start the morning with purpose, a way to wind down in the evening, or simple tools that remind us to pause, we’re here to support each other in making self-care a daily practice. Because we all deserve to feel at ease, especially in these chaotic times.
At the end of the day, self-care is about listening—to our body, our mind, our needs. Whatever self-care looks like for us today, we embrace it fully. And we embrace you.
